Caribs in Dominica

A few days ago one of my professors asked me what different ethnic groups lived in Dominica. I replied mostly blacks but there are a few Caribs as well. His eyes nearly popped out of his head!!

Its only then that I realized that many Jamaicans and probably alot of other Caribbean people are not aware that we still have Caribs living in Dominica.

So yes. There are still Caribs. No, they don't still practice cannibalism (another lecturer actually asked this question...smh)

Yes. They go to school and get educated like other Dominicans. No, they don't still walk around half-naked....

Don't believe me, non-Dominicans?.... check out the video!

  2. Caribs are just like everybody else
I met a few in the State college, they are very pleasant, by no means as vile as those depicted in history
Yes they have the carib hair you read about, they look like indians
No they don't walk around half naked.
They have occassions where they wear their traditional wears
The caribs leave in the Carib Reserve. Yes its a socialized community. they have water, food like everybody else
They go to school- primary, high school, college. Over the past years many scholarships for undergraduate degrees have been afforded to them

They are quite ordinary and many still do appreciate their culture

God Bless Dominica and all its people, whether black, carib or otherwise

  3. Regardless of what Pirates of Caribbean wanted you to believe, the Caribs are peaceful people. They don't eat each other, burn down their communities or the likes

Tourists always visit the reserve and even locals- no hostility is shown to them

The caribs are very talented. They make all kinds of products using straw- baskets, hats etc
